While living down in Mexico Maegan has been busy with a few different projects on the go.¬†One project (writing a paper) has sparked some serious interest in the relationship between gardening and mental wellness. It seems pretty consistent that gardening can be extremely beneficial to one’s wellness… as long as you enjoy gardening.

Studies have shown that these ‘green thumb’ activities can increase your heart rate and levels of movement to be sufficient physical activity to spark the release of serotonin and other happy chemicals in your brain. Gardening can also give you a routine, a sense of purpose and an opportunity to watch beauty grow from your hard work.

If you enjoy a little dirt under your fingernails, indulge in some gardening this summer. Inside, on the deck or in the yard, the benefits are all there.

Producing beauty while calming the mind. What more could we ask for?
